Heartbeats

Connections between you and the external world may be vast or few, distant or intimate, and complex or simple. Although no two are the same, they have common threads. Thoughts, feelings, actions, and properties of all energies touch those same points within other energies: Relationships. Heartbeats explores the many facets of love. Please enjoy a sampling.

Beyond Yin

Celestial notes enveloped my body and caressed my senses,
the angelic combination of yoga and harp.
Words came from the instructor, yet quickly bowed to
          heartfelt swells, now quiet plucking.
All captured my heart.
Yin shapes unfolded—I know not how.
          Time left.
I was face-to-face with my soul:
          beautiful, graceful and elegant.

In a garden of star gazers, we danced and swayed
          to the fragrant vibrations.
This was our time:
          for opening,
          for connecting,
          for releasing.
Oh, moments of being—the
          oneness of heart and mind.

I had never been so close to sound,
          so relaxed in moment,
          so absorbed in light.
All too soon my enchantment faded.
Time returned, yet with a magical gift:
Memories of angels on heart strings.

Gratitude

Give thanks in the blessings of now.
Fresh air, nature’s beauty, senses to absorb.
Every offering of food, clothing, and shelter.
          Community, diversity, random kindnesses.

Acknowledge the blessings that have been.
          Ancestors.
          Traditions.
          Relationships.
          Hope.

Be thankful in the blessings yet to come.
          Knowing oneness within.
          Expanding circles.
          Discovering common threads.
          Offering unconditional love.
Living the oneness that connects all.

Healing

Right now, I forget time
          and allow the present
          moment to hold me.
Light and Love sit with me
          and my heart relaxes.

In this space, I feel gratitude
          for things both obvious
          and previously overlooked.

Never alone, I am joined by nature:
          well-worn paths, freshly-clipped
basil or mint, and the night sky’s
          moon wisdom and star wishes.

In this space, regrets,
          disappointments, and loose ends
          have no hold on me.
I am free.
I am calm.

In this space, I am One with
          all energies.
I breathe in peace and breathe out
          any negativity.
Yes, the moment holds me.
I am joy, Light, and love.

Common Threads

I am open.
I allow transparency.
Feelings well up in my heart.
I am content.
I pause…
          Long enough to wonder,
          Long enough to imagine,
Long enough to feel the magic of the moment.

No rush or competition,
          rather encouragement and inclusion.
Each, a gift out of time, joins others in gratitude for breath, for connection, for unique expression.
Oneness is at hand.
Your presence is requested…
          Long enough to love,
          Long enough to serve,
Long enough to feel the magic of the moment.

You are open.
You allow transparency.
Feelings well up in your heart.
You are content.
You pause…
          Long enough to listen,
Long enough to see another’s soul,
Long enough to feel the magic of the moment.

For Just a Moment

For just a moment, slow your steps and
look out at the twinkling lights around you.
Community, care, strength, belonging.

For just a moment, slow your steps and
look around at windshield frost patterns,
          sleeping geese, and rosy-cheeked carolers.
Such unexpected beauty.

For just a moment, slow your steps and
look up at the falling snow,
each flake a reminder of holiday gatherings
          and wishes, past and present.

For just a moment, slow your steps and
look down at the sidewalk of footprints.
Homeless, jobless, atheists, or those of different sexual preference or color—
          all creating one path.

For just a moment, slow your steps and
look beyond hurtful words, judgments, or
          thoughtless actions.
Be quick to remain neutral and quicker to simply smile.

For just a moment, slow your steps and
look under the façade of appearances.
Share and listen to stories and coffeehouse conversations.
Build trust and understanding.

For just a moment, slow your steps and
          look within.
See your true beauty.
Be thankful in all things past, present, and
          soon-to-come.

For just a moment, slow your steps and look.
For just a moment, slow your steps.
For just a moment.

Grandpa Paul and I

Head-to-head whispers align us. Love of the Heart rhythm accompanies our elbow and belly snaking across the rug. Ba-bum. Ba-bum. Our vibrations soar. As angry sharks, Grandpa Paul and I are searching.

Oh, if only we could find whales in this great basement sea where the beautiful-voiced Ariel and her father, King Neptune, live. We hover behind the tall sea grasses in the corner by my cardboard fort, noticing the dazzling colors of the fish as they swim by.

I try to mimic them, but suddenly, I cannot move.

“Oh, no!” I shriek. “Help! I’m stuck in the mud.”

“Don’t worry,” soothes Grandpa Paul,“ I’ll pull you out.” A tug and hassle later, everything is fine.

“Let’s keep hunting,” I say. “Shhhh! Where are those whales, anyway? Are they hiding in the fireplace? Or by the treadmill in the far corner?” We head for the algae to discuss our strategy.

“We could surround them—or pretend to sleep, then leap” I suggest.

“Or,” hinted Grandpa Paul who suffered from sore elbows, “we could go upstairs for a shark snack and think about our odds.”

Surfacing from the depths, as we crawl up the stairs, we share versions of the same story. Food transforms our growling stomachs and comforts our rough elbows. We smile. Oneness overflows.

What’s Happening?

I’ve worked so long and hard.

.           Recognition, labels, occupation, image.

.           Personality characteristics.

.           The “go to” person.

All herald the success of my golden years.

Maintaining these aspects, I can look kindly.

All too quickly, things change.

My ego reminds me…

.          I forgot to meet Ann at 2p.

.          I got mixed up in taking my a.m. and p.m. medications.

.          I’m sure I turned off the gas burner, didn’t I?

Fading capabilities make me fearful.

What’s happening?

Who am I?

Can I look kindly?

I DON’T HAVE TO LOOK, do I?

Sooner or later, the Self I barely know surfaces.

It is the nature of slowing down and seeing life from a different perspective.

An opportunity for my eyes to gain clarity—a clarity

that is foreign to me.

Wait just a minute. Ego is puzzled.

I already know who I am, where my life is going,

and what is supposed to happen.

I’ve gotten it right after a number of years.

          Opinions… judge and jury…creator…executioner…

          Forgiver of selected memories…

I KNOW!

Why is this knowledge being tested?

Bridges

You emerged from the Universe, the Cosmos, the Unknown, or the Source of all that is at your birth and you will remerge with that higher power at your death. You are connected and eternal. Sometimes family dynamics are such that saying goodbye in person is prohibitive. To be close to Mom, I was inspired to write “Bridges,” prose poems that personify single words, offering ease, comfort, and love to all.

Compassion

Hello Mom,

This is Barb. You know me. I speak directly to your eternal soul.

I love you and am here to support you on your journey to the Light, your journey Home. I am Compassion. I take your hand and put my arm around your shoulders. You feel warmth and comfort. I am here for you. You look at me, and we smile. You remember me. I am Compassion.

You no longer feel worried or afraid. I hold your hand. You rest your body, peace comes, and you trust. You feel comfortable.

You have made life better for others with words of hope and kind actions. Thank you. Now direct that kindness to yourself. Fully love and accept who you are. Your higher power knows, understands, and welcomes you. Let go of expectations of how things “should be.” Let your heart open, grow, and feel love. Love is all there is.

There is no one else like you. You are precious to me. Let us be together as good friends. I am Compassion. Your suffering and joy is mine. Gently, Light surrounds us.
